Workplace Giving Spotlight: Christina App

Workplace Giving Spotlight August 26, 2025 Grayce Turnbach

Featured organization: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)

When I was pregnant with my youngest son, Owen, we learned he had coarctation of the aorta – a critical congenital heart defect that restricts blood flow. We were immediately referred to CHOP’s Fetal Heart Program, where I underwent extensive testing and routine fetal echocardiograms throughout the remainder of my pregnancy. We knew Owen would need surgery shortly after birth, and thanks to CHOP’s Special Delivery Unit – the first birth facility inside a pediatric hospital – I was able to deliver and recover in the same hospital where he received care.

At just six days old, Owen underwent open-heart surgery, followed by a cardiac catheterization at three months. Since then, he hasn’t required further treatment, and this year he is joyfully celebrating his 8th birthday.

CHOP’s commitment to innovation is incredible. In just eight years, I’ve seen new and less invasive treatment options emerge that weren’t available when Owen was born. We’re fortunate to live close to CHOP, but during our time there, we met families who traveled great distances – even relocating – so their children could receive the same level of care.

“Our family has benefited in the most profound way from CHOP’s doctors, nurses, and programs. I am forever grateful and committed to giving back, so CHOP can continue transforming the lives of patients and their families.”
