Workplace Giving Spotlight: Maria Milliken

Workplace Giving Spotlight February 1, 2024 Grayce Turnbach

Featured organization: American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life

“In 2009, my father was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of T-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma linked to Agent Orange exposure. A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, he spent 30 years serving our country – often in dangerous places – never imagining the greatest threat would come from within.

His cancer had just a 15% survival rate and no known cure. I dove into every study, every article – searching for hope. While I couldn’t save him, I made countless trips between Downingtown, PA, and Ashburn, VA to be by his side. He passed away two years later and was laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

As heartbroken as I was, I knew I couldn’t stay still. I joined my local American Cancer Society Relay for Life committee. Relay is more than a fundraiser – it fuels groundbreaking research, provides 24/7 support to patients, and expands access to lifesaving screenings.

Since 2009, I’ve raised funds in his memory. Helping others has helped me heal and every dollar raised brings us one step closer to a world without cancer.”
