As part of our commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion, we encourage everyone to bring their most authentic selves to work every day. This includes being mindful of your colleagues’ pronouns.
Society has often taught us to make automatic assumptions about what pronouns to use for someone. However, a person’s gender identity – the way the person identifies in terms of their gender – doesn’t always align with their gender expression – the way they look. In addition, not everyone identifies as male or female; they may identify as non-binary.
When a person includes their pronouns in an introduction, email signature, social media profile and/or Zoom, they are letting you know how to respectfully refer to them. Check out some examples below.
If Mark says, “My pronouns are he/him/his,” you can refer to him like this:
I reached out to Mark, and he said that he is free to attend the event.
If Jax says, “My pronouns are they/them/theirs,” you can refer to them like this:
I reached out to Jax, and they said that they are free to attend the event.
If Jamie says, “My pronouns are she/her/hers,” you can refer to her like this:
I reached out to Jamie, and she said that she is free to attend the event.
If Charlie says, “My pronouns are he/they,” you can refer to them like this:
I reached out to Charlie, and he said that they are free to attend the event.
If Riley says, “My pronouns are she/they,” you can refer to them like this:
I reached out to Riley, and she said that they are free to attend the event.
Using someone’s preferred pronouns in a positive way supports inclusion for everyone. Because you can’t always know what someone’s pronouns are unless they tell you, asking and correctly using someone’s pronouns is one of the most basic ways to show your respect for their gender identity.
We invite anyone who wants to add their gender pronouns to their email signature, Zoom and/or LinkedIn profile to do so.
